Open for the 2010 Lavender Festival, 10 am to 6 pm
Carol and Charles Tannenbaum manage their small lavender farm in the McKenzie River Valley about ten miles east of Springfield, Oregon. Located among the pastoral beauty of hazelnut orchards and pastures of grazing cattle or romping horses, the farm adds bright color and sweet aromas to the summer experience of the Valley. Carol had gardened for many years before they started the lavender venture in 2003. With family help over four very cold, wet November days, they planted about 1300 small plants covering 1/3 acre in prime sandy loam of the McKenzie River flood plain. The planting was made through landscape cloth to control weeds with drip irrigation added for summer irrigation.
Lavender varieties include Lavandula X intermedia cultivars ‘Grosso’, ‘Abrialii’, and ‘Provence’ and Lavandula angustifolia cultivars ‘Hidcote’ and ‘Royal Velvet’. The farm’s specialty lavender products include: pillows handmade of chenille and vintage handkerchiefs filled with dried spikes, organza sachets in various colors, dried floral bunches and wreaths, satin eye pillows, colorful ribbon- woven wands, culinary lavender and fresh bouquets in season. Future plans include lavender oil distillation.
The farm wll be open to visitors during the Lavender
Festival and will offer U-pick lavender, lavender plants, and lavender
lemonade and treats. Vendors will be selling handcrafted
skin care products, lavenders soaps and lotions, fresh wreaths,
and planters. Also open by appointment at (541) 736-8575
or caroltan@qwest.net.
